After Worship "Coffee Hour"
Provide a regular fellowship gathering after
morning worship. Encourage persons to remain and mingle, greeting guests and
existing members alike. Have light refreshments on hand to help entice folks to
stay.
BEST SUITED FOR: Any Size Congregation
WHAT'S INVOLVED?
 |
Arrange, through a fellowship group
(men's/women's) or a special task group, to have light refreshments
served after worship services. Hold this special fellowship time at least
once a month; weekly is preferable. |
 |
Place an announcement in the morning
bulletin alerting folks to this opportunity for fellowship. Give a special
invitation for all guests to join regular members at this special
after-worship event. |
 |
Arrange for the greeters to
"greet" not only before the worship service, but also after
the service at the coffee hour. Ask them to be especially alert to
guests and others on the fringes of the coffee hour "crowd."
Encourage them to go over to these persons, engage them in conversation, and
introduce them to other. |
 |
During the worship service preceding each
"coffee hour," do two things:
-
Ask the worship leader to call attention to "coffee
hour" and to underscore the special invitation to guests.
-
Ask the worship leader to encourage regular attenders to
get acquainted with persons they don't already know.
|
 |
Hold the "coffee hour" in a room that is large
enough for people to mingle and not feel "boxed in." Also
make sure the room is accessible and easily found by persons not familiar
with your building. In warmer weather, you might want to hold it on
the church lawn. |
DO'S AND DON'TS
 |
DO......promote a spirit of warmth and hospitality at your
event. |
 |
DO......hold the "coffee hour" on a weekly basis
if at all possible. |
 |
DO......share responsibility for holding the event among
several groups and individuals. |
 |
DON'T......just serve coffee! Not everyone
likes coffee. Provide tea, juice, and milk, if possible. |
 |
DON'T......serve heavy snacks like care, pie, sandwiches, or
donuts. Light/finger foods such as veggies, cookies, cheese and crackers,
and so forth work best. |
 |
DON'T......forget the emphasis is on fellowship,
not eating. |
RESOURCES NEEDED: light food and beverages for the event.
COST: minimal
