Discipling Partners
Pair new Christians and mature believers as discipling partners to provide
support and increased growth. This relationship begins in a membership or
welcome class that they both attend and would continue for six months following.
BEST SUITED FOR: Any Size Congregation
WHAT'S INVOLVED?
 | Ask mature and caring members to serve as discipling
partners to new Christians (or other believers considering membership in
your congregation). These may be the same persons who previously
served as friendship partners. |
 | At the first meeting of a membership or inquiry group,
suggest discipling pairs, adjusting suggestions as necessary. |
 | A portion of each session to follow should be done in
these pairs to allow personal sharing and application among discipling
partners. |
 | Discipling pairs should also arrange some other
informal times together outside of the larger group. |
 | Meetings every two weeks should follow the group
experience if this seems helpful and appropriate. |
DO'S AND DON'TS:
 | DO......prayerfully choose and assign partners. The
basic role of the "senior" partner is to encourage and listen. |
 | DO......emphasize that formal training isn't necessary. |
 | DON'T......make the process seem complicated. The
structure is simple and the basic ingredient is mutual friendship. |
RESOURCES NEEDED:
 | Established and newer believers willing to commit time
to disciple new believers. |
 | John R. Martin explains the concept of "discipling
partners" in his book, Ventures in Discipleship, a resource
designed to be used in such relationships. The concept, however, can be
adapted to other classes and curriculum. |
