New Life Ministries announces luncheon for
2001 Church of the Brethren Annual Conference
New
Life Ministries will host a luncheon at the upcoming Church of the Brethren
Annual Conference on Monday, July 2, 2001, in Baltimore. William
Cardinal Keeler, Archbishop of Baltimore, will speak on the topic,
"The Call of Jesus Christ to Us Today: An Invitation to Conversion,
Solidarity, and Communion."
The annual luncheon provides Annual
Conference attendees with an opportunity to learn more about the work of New
Life Ministries and to receive inspiration for outreach in their personal lives
and through their congregations.
Jeryl Metzler will provide special music at the luncheon.
Metzler, a member of the White Oak Church of the Brethren in Manheim, Pa., is a
soloist with the Lancaster Opera Company.
Cardinal Keeler was appointed Archbishop of
Baltimore by Pope John Paul II in 1989 as the 14th Ordinary of the nation's
oldest See. He was elected to the College of Cardinals by Pope John Paul
II in 1994.
As Archbishop of Baltimore, Cardinal Keeler
has been an outspoken advocate for expanded evangelization throughout the parish
community. He has also been a vigilant leader of the pro-life movement and
has worked to strengthen the Catholic school system. Through the National
Conference of Catholic Bishops, he has developed a reputation for effectively
building interfaith bonds. He also serves as chairman of the board of
Catholic Charities, the largest non-governmental agency providing assistance to
the needy in Maryland.
Prior to becoming archbishop, he had served
as Bishop of Harrisburg, Pa. from 1983-1989. Before that, he had served as
a parish priest in the Harrisburg diocese since 1956. It was while
Cardinal Keeler was serving in the Harrisburg diocese that he became acquainted
with Pastor Earl Ziegler and the Church of the Brethren.
"We are very privileged to have Cardinal
Keeler speak for our luncheon," said Joan Hershey, coordinator of New Life
Ministries. She encouraged prospective conference attendees to sign up for
the luncheon once the Annual Conference registration materials are released.
Cost for the luncheon is $16.00.
Pre-registration should be completed through the regular Annual Conference registration
process (event #17). Registration deadline is June 1, 2001.
