A Public Relations Checklist
Public relations certainly includes
traditional strategies such as brochures, newspaper articles, and letters of
welcome to new people in the neighborhood. But those are only a beginning. Use
the following checklist with your church board, evangelism committee, or
hospitality task force as a discussion-starter. Put a check mark by each of the
following if your church already does it; place a plus sign if the item is
something your church might try!
___ When your church sends people
or money to help a mission project in your community or on the other side of the
world, do news releases explaining what has been done and why.
___ Offer training each year to
help greeters and ushers be better
prepared to welcome and assist those who visit.
___ Offer members, visitors, and
the general public the opportunity to receive a "Cyber
Devotional" once a week by e-mail to their homes.
___ Send a monthly
newspaper with articles about your church and about the faith to homes
in selected neighborhoods.
___ Use "Targeted Delivery
Service" through your local newspaper to get fliers and program information
to selected residential areas at a very low price. These are packs of
information delivered separately from the newspaper and are available in many
communities.
___ Link from your church’s website
to many others which will provide information about your denomination and about
other services of interest to people.
___ Have a person in your church
who develops relationships with the news media and learns how to write news
releases which will be positively received.
___ Work with your youth group to
develop a weekly program on a local
cable channel. Some channels will let you use their equipment!
