A Word from James W. Moss, Sr.
I was employed by the East Pennsylvania Conference of the Churches of God on July 1, 1977, as Assistant to the Superintendent. My responsibilities included working with Christian Education and Church Development.
I did a study that forever changed my life. I did a 20-year profile on each of our churches at that time. I was shaken to the very core. I knew we weren't growing. It didn't take a rocket scientist to determine that. But I was not prepared for the losses I saw. That study propelled the development of "Does Your Church Really Care about People?," "People Spots: Places of Belonging," "A Christian Perspective on Leadership Skills," and my newest seminar (soon to be a book), "Churches Have Personalities." Much of this information has been shared among our people for years, and I believe has had some impact. I am not naive. Many have helped to make this report possible.
My position has changed some since the early days. I am now Associate Conference Minister for Church Planting and Renewal. I share this information as an affirmation that what I have taught, when practically applied, has the potential to impact a local church, a regional body, and, yes, even a denomination.
 | In 1977, there were 101 churches in our conference. One of those churches had a second worship service at that time. Our average worship attendance was 10,249. It slipped to 10,178 in 1978. |
| In 1999, our worship attendance was 11,701 in 1999. There are now 115 churches in our conference. Approximately 30 of our churches have multiple worship services today. One of our churches has three morning worship services. We have had growth in worship attendance in 10 of the last 11 years as a conference. |
