Spiritual Gifts & Bivocational MinistryBivocational ministry in today's terms means a situation in which a pastor has an additional vocation or occupation. The bivocational minister generally draws financial support from both positions, though sometimes all the support comes from the non-ministry position. The Brethren Academy for Ministerial Leadership at Bethany Theological Seminary and Christian Community have been involved in a joint project which began with a study of bivocational ministry. In the process of doing that study, Christian Community developed a renewed interest in better understanding the concept of the priesthood of all believers: the belief that all people, not just ordained or set-apart clergy, are called to ministry and have been given gifts for ministry. The study of the opportunities and problems faced by bivocational ministers gave us new perspective on the issues involved in all people claiming their God-given ministries. The resulting publication takes the reader through a spiritual gifts discernment process in an effort to help them come to a new understanding of their own ministries as well as a better understanding of set-apart ministry. |
