Talking About Our Faith

Steve Clapp
Steve Clapp is the president of Christian Community and senior
consultant for New Life Ministries. He is a popular church
consultant, author, and workshop leader. He has authored or
co-authored over 30 books on congregational life, including
Sharing Living Water
and Peer Evangelism.
What This Seminar Is About
Many of us are more comfortable talking football or investments
or the weather than about our faith. Christians readily agree that
we should share our faith with others and invite them to church.
And studies continue to show that personal invitations and warm
welcomes result in growing congregations. But how do we do it?
This practical and entertaining workshop will help participants:
 | Learn how to comfortably talk about their faith and the
importance of the church. |
| Recognize the ways in which Scripture can guide us in the
way we approach faith-sharing. |
| Identify natural connecting points which let them share
their faith or invite others to church without using
manipulation or pressure. |
| Develop strategies to meaningfully share concern with
others. |
| Learn how we can better involve visitors and new members in
the overall life of our congregation. |
Who Should Attend
This workshop is of special importance to pastors, evangelism
and nurture chairpersons, board chairpersons, caregivers. and
deacons. But it is actually for anyone in the church who wants to
learn how to more effectively talk about the faith and reach new
people. Teenagers, young adults, middle-aged adults, and
senior adults will all gain from this experience!

Session One: Faith and Friendship
| Identify times when the church or our faith has been
especially important. |
| Explore why we life in a time when so many are interested in
spiritual concerns but not in the church. |
| Look at the meaning of friendship today and why caring
friendship is the foundation for outreach. |
Session Two: Listening and Caring
| Learn the crucial role of listening and caring in personal
faith-sharing. |
| Identify ways to improve listening skills. |
| Come to better understand the needs of people both inside
and outside the church. |
| Explore creative ways of showing concern as individuals and
congregations. |
Session Three: Putting Our Faith into Words
| Come to understand talking about our faith as a natural part
of a caring relationship. |
| Learn to use words for faith-sharing which unchurched people
can understand. |
| Develop skills for talking about the faith in a
nonthreatening, comfortable way. |
| Identify the best ways to invite people to become part of
the life of the church. |
Session Four: Helping New People Become Part of the Church
| Learn how to make your church one that is serious about
involving new people. |
| Find out why hospitality must be central to the life of the
church and not just another program. |
| Identify the next steps to take in response to this workshop
and to make a difference in your church and in your life. |
